Canada Issues New GHS Guidelines

On February 11, the Canadian government published the Canadian GHS in the Canada Gazette, Part 2. The goal is to align the contents of the existing Canadian regulations about classification, labelling and about creating safety data sheets from 1988 step by step with the American Hazard Communication Standard (2012) now in effect and the requirements of the United Nations Purple Book, Revision 5.

Because laws created at federal level usually take time to be implemented throughout the entire country, regulators have defined transition periods. During this phase, those affected by the law must observe the older regulation from 1988 or the newly issues regulations. Observing a combination of the two is not permitted. As of December 1, 2018, only the new GHS regulations will be in effect.
