New Era of Risk Assessment

Scientists at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are working on new and improved models to estimate the risks of chemicals. The new models include data on toxicity along with data on consumer products and the use of the products. The goal is to find more exact information on the actual exposure to chemicals. The scientists also hope that the new model will provide more-exact insights into the relationship of chemical expose to illnesses like asthma.

The EPA has already established a database of more than 1,800 chemicals in 353 product categories. Another of its databases contains information on the use of more than 40,000 chemicals.
An overview article has been published in a professional journal, Environmental Health Perspectives.
